Responsible Technology.
Nabors PACE®-X Rig.

An intelligent rig design that advocates sustainable and responsible operations, the PACE®-X rig addresses a major challenge faced by the oil and gas industry – responsible energy production. Its reduced footprint is optimized for drilling on a pad and can efficiently move in any direction with the capability of stepping over existing wellheads. It eliminates high-risk activity during skidding operations and can also utilize natural gas fuel. Conceptually, the PACE®-X rig is the culmination of our worldwide drilling expertise translated into a rig that leverages leading-edge technology while championing operational stewardship.

Nabors is unequivocally committed to the safety and welfare of our employees, customers, communities and suppliers, and to the protection of the environment. We continue to initiate new safety programs under the umbrella of Mission Zero, a company-wide effort to eliminate injuries and incidents. We are also unveiling new products and processes that shrink our footprint, reduce emissions and contain every discharge. These efforts reflect our commitment to be good stewards of the people and the resources entrusted to our care.

Environmentally Conscious Operations
Nabors is a pioneer when it comes to drilling in environmentally sensitive areas. We drilled an initial discovery well on Alaska’s North Slope and have a 50-year history of successful operations in this closely regulated area. Nabors has also drilled in Canadian national forests and in wildlife and bird sanctuaries throughout North America. Our small footprint pad drilling rigs are recognized for having minimal impact on their surroundings. Nabors’ experience drilling in environmentally sensitive areas recently led a major operator to select Nabors to drill a series of wells in the rainforest of Papua New Guinea. The rigs Nabors constructed for the project were designed to capture every drop of rain that fell on any rig equipment and to process and dispose of any waste generated during the life of the project. Nabors has been equally successful in offshore waters. We continue to operate without incident in the now highly regulated U.S. Gulf of Mexico, where we have a dominant position in the deepwater platform rig market.

Resource Management and Conservation
Effectively managing our resources is a key part of Nabors’ conservation strategy. To this end, Nabors has developed equipment condition monitoring systems like FuelTool, which matches the use of diesel fuel with demand, thereby reducing consumption dramatically as well as the attendant emissions. Our PACE®-X series rig is also capable of operating on a mixture of diesel and natural gas, a process that cuts fuel consumption, reduces emissions and eliminates much of the road traffic associated with replenishing fuel supplies. Meanwhile we continue to build new rigs designed to drill more efficiently and shorten the drilling cycle, further reducing our environmental impact.

Emissions Reduction
Nabors continues to upgrade our fleet and retire older rigs. For more than a decade we have been upgrading rig engines with new, electronically controlled models that consume less fuel and reduce emissions. Of the 3 million horsepower available on Nabors rigs, 80 percent is generated by low-sulfur diesel engines. We are further reducing emissions by designing and manufacturing rigs that reduce the number of days required to drill a well, with a corresponding reduction in emissions. Nabors has also invested in one of the most modern truck fleets in the industry. These trucks burn low-sulfur diesel, significantly improving air quality in areas that require high truck traffic.

Better Well Control
Well control has attracted greater public attention since the Macondo well blowout, but it has always been important to Nabors. In fact, Nabors was one of the first companies to train employees to detect and respond appropriately in well control situations. It’s also why the company retains Wild Well Control, a specialist in blowout prevention and remediation. Wild Well Control trains supervisors and members of the rig crew in our U.S. land operations on well control indicators, kick detection and preventative measures of minimizing blowout risk.

Rapid Remediation and Response
Nabors promotes and maintains a variety of systems to prevent incidents. In the unfortunate event of an incident, emergency action plans are in place to respond while simultaneously notifying the appropriate agencies as required. Every Nabors crew is proactively trained in spill prevention, which includes steps for containing spills if they occur. Each rig is equipped with a spill containment kit that minimizes response time, thus mitigating the impact. Regular external audits are conducted to ensure that Nabors is in compliance with these and other applicable guidelines.

Safety
At Nabors, caring for people and the environment is a core value. This is evident in our Mission Zero program, a core tenet of which is that zero incidents is achievable.

Nabors’ culture has progressed from managing incidents to preventing them. The focus is on minimizing risky behaviors as exemplified by our Stop Work Authority Program, empowering anyone at any level on any rig or facility to stop any action they believe to be unsafe.

Nabors is committed to integrating best practices developed through years of experience into a single, cohesive plan and message. Safety initiatives like Global Safety Week, the Rules to Live By and Professionals Follow Procedures are now being shared company-wide through training sessions, videos and posters displayed on every rig and at every facility.

Recognizing employee contributions to safety is a key component of the Nabors’ safety strategy. During monthly executive meetings and on our internal social network site, we highlight employee actions that prevent injury.

The end result of these company actions and initiatives is not only a continuing decline in our recordable incident rate, but also a corresponding decline in severity.

Personnel security
Nabors is a global company operating in many countries and within a broad spectrum of political environments. In every case the safety and security of Nabors employees is paramount.

Nabors publishes a Security and Response Manual to address adverse influences against the company and its representatives. Categories of guidance are addressed including planning, response, training and audit. Unstable countries are monitored on a regular basis and security risk assessments are issued to company offices, rigs and other assets. Rigs and facilities are also provided with security adequate for the situation. If the safety of an employee is in doubt, that employee is relocated.

Nabors takes a proactive approach to security in every country in which we operate. Country-specific training and orientation is provided to employees entering a country for the first time. That orientation covers issues such as the safety of the drinking water, the likelihood of bribery or corruption and the potential for crime. Employees are instructed on specific actions to take if problems are encountered.
